Joshua Lavine has been photographing real people in their work environments for more than twenty years. He uses primarily available light, documenting rather than directing his subjects' activities. If an image must be staged, he allows his subjects to become engrossed in a familiar and comfortable activity before beginning to shoot. As an observer, he is able to create images that are unposed yet well-composed, presenting real people doing what they really do.
